ASTIGMATISM
Astigmatism is a common vision condition that results in blurred vision at multiple distances, not simply near or far.
In an eye with 20/20 vision, the eye surface or cornea is smooth and perfectly curved so that light focuses on the retina.
Astigmatism causes light to focus at multiple points because the eye surface is irregularly shaped or the curvature of the lens is abnormal.
The situation could be likened to the surface differences between a bowling ball and a football. One is perfectly smooth and round and the other has an irregular shape and surface.
Astigmatism is typically present at birth and can therefore affect both children and adults.
Astigmatism can also develop later in life following an eye injury or eye surgery.
Like fingerprints, every eye is unique and because few eyes are perfectly shaped, most people will have some degree of astigmatism.
Many times, slight astigmatism does not affect vision or require correction.
If you have astigmatism, there are a variety of options to correct your vision.
Dr. McGee can help choose the treatment that best meets your needs.
