For patients with mild dry eye, often some minor modifications to their environment may bring relief. According to the American Optometric Association here are a few steps you can take to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes:
Hydrate - be sure to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day
Humidify - increasing the indoor humidity, especially in dry climates can help
Reduce impact from sun and wind - if you spend time outdoors, using wraparound sunglasses can help protect your eyes
Blink - be sure to blink regularly when reading or using technology for long durations
If you have tried the modifications above without success, our dry eye specialists can help you understand other treatment options that may be suitable for your specific condition. Some of those options are shown below. Contact our staff to schedule a dry eye exam or consultation.
Most people think of these as eye drops that can be purchased over-the-counter. Many of these can be effective for managing mild cases of dry eye. Look for artificial tears without preservatives as they have fewer additives which have been known to cause eye irritation.
HydroEye® from Science Based Health
is a patented nutritional formulation that works from the inside out to provide continuous support for dry, itchy eyes. HydroEye, clinically found to promote dry eye comfort in peer reviewed research, delivers a proprietary blend of GLA and omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), antioxidants and other key vitamins and minerals that work together to support a healthy tear film and soothe the ocular surface.
Restasis®: Often, the root cause of dry eye disease is inflammation of the eyes’ tear-producing gland; this inflammation can be triggered or made worse by allergies, smoking, prolonged computer use, and other factors mentioned above. Unlike artificial tears, which only temporarily relieve dry eyes, Restasis® Ophthalmic Emulsion actually stimulates your eyes to produce more tears, addressing the root cause of discomfort.
Restasis® is a prescription eye drop that, when used twice daily, causes a noticeable increase in natural tear production that will continue to improve with time. Restasis® can be used in conjunction with artificial tears, though non-prescription eye drops will become less necessary as healthy tear production is restored. Restasis® has been well tolerated by patients.
iTear 100 by Olympic Opthalmics is the latest medical breakthrough in treating dry eyes. iTear 100 is a neurostimulator which allows the patient to self apply the stimulation as needed by using a small, portable, rechargeable device. Instead of using drops or prescription drugs, the neurostimulator signals the body to naturally produce tears. This is one of the most significant advancements in treating chronic dry eye disease.
TearCare is a device that attaches to the eyelids to gently warm the meibomian glands allowing your doctor to remove gland blockage. TearCare is used as an open-eye device, which allows for natural blinking during the procedure.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy is a groundbreaking treatment for dry eye disease. This in-office treatment delivers short, powerful pulses of light that gently heat the skin around the eyelids. This helps liquefy and release oils that have hardened and clogged the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This improves the quality of the tears produced by these glands and significantly reduces unpleasant dry eye symptoms. The treatment takes 15-20 minutes.
Rinsada™ is an effective treatment for cleaning the entire ocular surface, providing immediate and lasting relief. Insufficient tear production can trap inflammation, pollutants, and allergens on the eye. Rinsada uses high-pressure saline to target areas under the eyelid and the deep fornix, where normal rinsing cannot reach, effectively resetting the ocular surface.
